PHOTO: Herd at sunset

The sunny, mild days of this January have been very unlike the winter we usually get!     But, if you have got out and enjoyed them, you’ll have had some unexpected pleasures, like the colourful sunsets, which are all the better for being low in the sky.

Cows in Cresswell

The herd heads home in the setting sun

This photo was sent to us by Rowan – thanks!   It shows the view from the bridge at Cresswell, looking west along the River Blithe, as the cows head home for milking.

It reminded us of the opening lines from The Elegy written by Thomas Gray: “The curfew tolls the knell of parting day,  The lowing herd wind slowly o’er the lea…”.
