New defib for village

Excellent news is that Draycott-in-the-Moors now has a new public defibrillator – which was installed at the Draycott Arms just a couple of weeks ago.

A defibrillator is a little unit which is used to deliver a mild electric shock to anyone who is in cardiac arrest, and so it can save lives. It is not a substitute for calling 999, but, when minutes count, it can be used while you’re waiting for the ambulance.

Well done to the parish council for facilitating the project, but well-done chiefly of course to the donors. These units are not provided by the authorities; cash is needed. And well done too to the Arms; the system will feed off the pub’s electric supply – without that, the mechanism could fail.

The new unit brings the number of defibrillators in the locality to three – joining the long-established one in the Cresswell kiosk and the one at Draycott Sports Centre. It’s hoped one may be installed at The Golden Keg in the future.

Fayre enough

It’s a bit after the event, yes, but we should mention the Draycott Fayre, which took place on August 22nd.
Despite having to be organised very much at the last minute (to ensure it was Covid-friendly), things went smoothly and a good day was had by all. The Stunner newspaper did the event proud by giving it a centre-spread in its pages, using photographs taken by Neil Archibald.

(Neil Archibald is one of the stalwarts at Draycott St Margaret’s Church. Many of the church’s congregation were helping on the day, because the funds raised go toward the maintenance of our 800 year-old church).
Neil has put an album of dozens of photos of the day on to the Flickr website on the internet – click here to see them. There’s a nice sense of humour to them, so well worth checking out!

Of course, the numbers of visitors were well down on previous years, so the church won’t get its usual level of funding from the fayre this year, but still well-done to John Clarke and his team for making it happen, against the odds…

Aye aye captain

Talking of John Clarke, congratulations to him on being appointed ‘Tower Captain’ at St Margaret’s. The moniker sounds grander than it is (!), but it is an old title, meaning the leader of a church’s bell-ringers.

The team at the church will be busy practising over the next months for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year, when bells will ring right across the country.
They always need volunteers (and it’s great way to keep fit), so, if you fancy a go, email John.

If you enjoy bells (and who doesn’t?), there’s nothing more calming than to sit outside the church on an evening when the team are practising (usually Thursdays). It’s a great way to relieve stress, honest…

Old makes new

Finally, don’t throw away your unwanted computers. Members of our local Rotary Club are asking for donations of second-hand hand laptops/tablets, which they will refurbish and pass on to neighbourhood schools.

The need for more computers for children is a Covid thing, because so many kids have had to go online for their education, and sometimes even just to catch up on what they’ve been missing – so kids without a lot of access to a computer are having a hard time.

By the way, if you’re concerned about any data that might be still on your computer, don’t worry. The promise is that the computers will be first ‘wiped’ by a professional technician, which makes it a great option.
Rotary’s Peter Nixon is also offering to come pick up the old computers; or you can drop them off at Blythe Bridge Library. Contact Peter for details.

Take a bow!

The recent Staffordshire Moorlands Star Volunteering Awards ceremony saw a bunch of honours for residents of this locality. In fact, if there had been an award for the village to get the most mentions, Draycott would have had it!

Top recognition should go to the Draycott Covid Support Group, which picked up the award for the New Volunteer-Group of The Year. Led by Kathleen Ferneyhough and her trusty aide Denise Wheat, the group has been a beacon of light in the last twelve months. The group’s members (about forty in all) helped out their neighbours by running errands, walking dogs, giving emotional support and more. What was also very impressive was the way that they also built a system to preserve privacy for all. Extremely well deserved.

It was also very good indeed to see that John Clarke, the go-to man in Draycott for many years, got a commendation in the Lifetime Achievement section. You can see his story by clicking here. It seems odd to have given John a ‘lifetime’ award as he is not old by any means (!), and continues on strongly. Right now he’s enmeshed in organising the Draycott Summer Fayre (booked for late August) – so if you can help, please contact him.

Last but never least, there was a commendation in the Young Volunteer of The Year category for young Leo Myatt, the ‘knight of Draycott’ (see pic right). Most of us have seen him on his frequent strolls around the village in his helmet & tunic; and he even got a touch of fame when he even had his story covered in The Sun newspaper. As the nomination said, the reason for his inclusion was not so much his achievements as his ability to constantly be bringing a smile to the community in gloomy times.

Getting friendly – with Barlaston, Trentham and Meir

The government is on a drive to reduce the number of parliamentary constituencies, which means many constituencies will be getting a new shape. It has just published its recommendations for these new shapes.
Although everyone thought we’d be moved into the Staffs Moorlands constituency to be with Cheadle and Leek, what the Boundary Commission would actually like to see is that when (if?) Draycott moves out of the Stone constituency, it goes into what is virtually a new one, where the village will be joined up with Barlaston, Trentham, Blythe Bridge, Fulford, Meir and bits of south Longton.
(At district council level though, we would still stay under Staffordshire Moorlands).

The shape of the potential new constituency

The new constituency (see map) is being called ‘Stoke South’ which is a bit odd, as most of it is rural and in Stafford Borough, with the only Stoke bits being in the bump at the top of it. (see map).
On paper, the seat would be a Conservative hold, though in some years veering toward marginal.

We quite like the idea. It’s always fun to be in a seat that is slightly marginal, because the MP has to work hard for you (unlike the current one!) in order to get your vote, and so your vote really does matter.

However, not everyone will be happy with the recommendation, so the Boundary Commission is inviting you to comment – click here for how to do that. The consultation ends on August 2nd.

Facebook’s shenanigan

You may have noticed that the village Facebook page has recently changed its status to ‘private’. Thus means that, unless you are signed up to the page, you can’t see its discussions.
Some ex-Draycottians living abroad aren’t happy with that. As one told us, they liked being able to drop in on the page occasionally to see the gossip. (The reason they give for not actually signing up to the page is that you have to be registered with Facebook first, and there are too many worries for them about the way that Facebook treats privacy concerns, especially abroad.)

However, we’re told that the change to private was slightly forced on the page’s administrators.
In a recent, universal change, Facebook altered the rules on group-pages such as Draycott’s so that even non-members can post. Well, our administrators felt that was unfair, and so that left them with only the one alternative – to go private.
From now on, if you do want to join in the group, first you must have registered with Facebook, and then you must click the Join button on the group-page itself.

Roadworks dates

The incessant rains have not only caused flash flooding in the village but have also delayed the roadworks up by the A521-A50 roundabout.

So we contacted Colin Redmond, the Project Manager, for an update, and he told us that a revised schedule was now in place, meaning that…
~Eastbound incoming lanes will now remain closed until Monday 16 December.
~Then the Christmas break comes into force, i.e. there will be a lane open both ways – until Thursday 9 Jan.
~On Thursday 9 Jan, the big reversal takes place – with westbound, outgoing lanes closed altogether, but with an eastbound, incoming lane now open – until February 14th.
~After February 14th, things get a bit more messy as all the loose ends are tidied up, so the arrangements for these weeks following might be in more flux.
In theory, it should all be over by mid March.

So far, the roadworks have caused few problems for us, but the second phase (i.e. the one starting in January) was always the one that was going to be the most difficult. In this second phase, we will see a heavier concentration of traffic through Blythe Bridge and so, possible delays.
Patience will be needed…

Seen a candidate?

It always annoys us when people argue against proportional representation for Parliament by saying that “at least we will get a representative who is truly local and whom we can talk to”.
The true fact is that, in most constituencies, one rarely sees one’s MP!

Photo by Element5 Digital on Pexels.comFor example, we were really hoping for a local village-hall hustings this election time. (Hustings are when the candidates come together on a panel to appear before a local audience). In fact, in Stoke, hustings are already set to take place.
But, here in our constituency (the constituency of Stone), only one full one has been arranged so far – and that will be online only!

Still, anyway, well done to the local online news-website A Little Bit of Stone for organising it. If you click on to their Facebook site on the evening of Wed December 3rd (between 7pm and 9pm), you will observe the candidates ‘debating’ live as they make their pitches on a video stream.

The only local other hustings we know of is in Eccleshall (one of the main towns in our constituency along with Stone, Cheadle, Blythe Bridge and Madeley) on Thursday 28th. However, it is not a full hustings because the Conservative candidate has declined to appear; all the other candidates will be there though (click here for candidates list).
It’s at the Royal Oak pub in Eccleshall from 7.30pm; it’s been organised by the Eccleshall Today website.

Christmas is coming

Nice to see that the local churches are already publishing their Christmas schedules. Here in Draycott, our community carols will take place on Sunday Dec 22nd.

Chrissi Thompson, who used to run the Draycott Youth Club, is asking us to make little knitted figures which will then be situated in public sight around the district… to make us all feel a bit more Christmassy. It’s a great idea.

“Christmas bells, Christmas bells…”

Finally, we smiled on reading a post on the village Facebook page where there was a discussion about St Margaret’s bells ringing on the hour. Was the church’s bell-ringing team really traipsing up to the church to ring the bells every sixty minutes?

Well, it would be nice to think they were but, no, they aren’t! The chimes ringing from the church are on a timer.

If you’re thinking that you can’t remember hearing them, it’s not just because they are relatively quiet. The fact is that the chiming mechanism had not been working for a long time; and it took major efforts by Draycott’s Mr-Fixit, John Clarke, to get it all working again, and they’ve only been in action a while.
Well done to him!  They have a magical, traditional sound.

As for the St Margaret’s Church bell-ringing team, yes, they are still going strong, and it will be great to hear them pull a full peal of bells on Christmas Day…

Draycott going green

One small but important aspect of this year’s (fantastic) Draycott Fayre was … its bins.
The choice of waste disposal may not seem significant at first, but the way that the fayre organisers chose to do it this year was quite different to previous. This year they decided to go green, and so installed recycling bins; and they are to be congratulated on the success of their efforts.

The main coordinator of the fayre, John Clarke had this to say:
“In previous years we have had a skip (generously provided by the local company, Hartley’s) but this year we provided blue bins marked with the type of waste that can be recycled such as glass, metal tins, cardboard and plastics.

Recycling bins at Draycott Fayre 2019As it was a new effort this year I wasn’t sure what reaction we would get from our Fayre visitors, but, having taken the blue bins up to the Cheadle Recycling Centre, can I say that the results were astounding – there were very few instances of mistakes, i.e. of the wrong recycled waste in the wrong bin!
To a certain extent I think our Fayre visitors are ahead of the general population in honouring the recycling ethos!”

And the bins weren’t the only ‘green’ thing at the fayre. The kids’ art competition (another first for the fayre) had for its theme, Saving The Planet – and the young people responded brilliantly.

In their drawings and painting, you could see that they understood the issues of the environment very well – much better than some of us older ones in fact.

Village level

The organisers of Draycott Fayre hope that their good example will be noticed by all households in the neighbourhood. Many of us sadly do not yet recycle, and those of us who do don’t always bother to do it right.

There is also a newly opened Eco-Centre in Uttoxeter where volunteers are happy to give advice if you are still confused.

Climate emergency

This month also saw the formal declaration of a pledge by our representatives at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council to go ‘carbon neutral’ by 2030. This was in response to councillors’ increasing worries about climate-change – because experts think we have just 12 years left until it gets irreversible.
SMDC followed a good example: one of Theresa May’s last acts as prime minster was to commit the UK to halving carbon emissions by 2030 – the first leading nation to do so.

Not surprisingly, the move was welcomed by the local ‘Staffordshire Moorlands Climate-Action Community’ organisation, a new action group.

And what about our own village council? Will Draycott Council follow the lead of other community councils and take up the climate pledge? It would be good to think they would.

In a way, Draycott is already a centre for sustainable energy. The district already hosts one ‘solar farm’ (where solar panels harness the energy from the sun to make electricity), i.e. the Newton Solar Farm; and it looks like we may be welcoming another one soon (for details, see Cresswell solar farm proposal.)

Wind turbines

But the big test of our local representatives’ green credentials will be when the next crop of applications to build wind turbines comes up.
So far Staffordshire Moorlands and Draycott Council, and even our local MP Bill Cash, have opposed new turbines whenever they could.
Will they change their minds?

John’s busy time

John ClarkeA big thank you to everyone who voted for Draycott’s own John Clarke (right) in the Moorlands Volunteer Of The Year Awards.  The result was announced at a special ceremony in Leek and our John came an honourable joint second. It’s all based on a public vote, so second is a very good result for someone from a small village such as ours.
As John said, it’s a time of great flux for our neighbourhood, so anything that gets a positive headline for Draycott has got to be a good thing.

Right now though John is hugely busy putting the finishing touches to the preparations for this year’s Draycott Fayre Weekend (on July 7th & 8th). He is chief organiser (and bottle washer!) for the fayre.
Plenty of late bookings are still being arranged, with the most fascinating one being the promise of the sight of a reconstructed World War One trench dug-out (see below)!

It’s being created by the secretary of the local history society; and for anyone interested in the conflict of the 1914-18 War it will be a big draw.

Do keep checking the updates to the line-up, because – as we say – lots and lots of stuff keeps being added on… and you won’t want to miss out on anything…

Buses survey

As we reported last month, there was a brief glimmer of hope that the number 12 bus route, which runs through Draycott & Cresswell, might be restored after it was cancelled in March. However even that small hope has now been dashed, as the county council has now definitively refused to continue the subsidy for it.

Some Staffordshire local/parish councils have stepped into the breach and stumped up money to keep their village bus services running, but it’s an expensive option. The other question is: how many people would use the bus even if it was brought back?

The district’s local newspaper, the Cheadle & Tean Times, is now running a survey on the issue, basically asking “would you use a bus service if there was one?” If it’s something that worries you, it’s worth completing the survey, which is on page six of the current issue.

Arms expansion

While sifting among recent planning applications, we saw that Zara & Brayn at the Draycott Arms are continuing their plans for the pub by putting up proposals for a few bed-and-breakfast rooms.  It certainly would be great to have such accommodation in the heart of the village, as the nearest alternatives are just out of walking distance.

However, Zara & Brayn, just like John, might be a bit too busy over the next seven days to worry about that side of their business. Next weekend (Sat 7th July) they are the hosts of the Draycott Saturday Night Live In the Marquee event, when they will be putting on a mini beer & cider festival to accompany the live music on stage.

Shame

Draycott hit the national headlines for all the wrong reasons last week when one local resident here in Draycott was convicted of inciting race hatred in views she expressed on her website.  Barbara Fielding-Morriss, who is 79 years old, describes herself as ‘white supremacist’, a despiser of Jews and a fascistic supporter of Hitler. She faces a possible seven years in prison when she is sentenced next month.
She chose not to have legal representation during the trial, which the judge was very surprised at.

Fortunately, it seems Barbara is almost a lone voice and has very few members in her ‘party’. But it does all leave a very bad taste in the mouth.

The Draycott Council bit

(Our local Draycott Council gets up to so many odd things that we almost can’t keep up, so we have given the council its own little section)

After all the confusion and upset over the last couple of months, a new clerk to the council is finally in place.

The very popular former clerk felt compelled to resign in March saying she felt under-valued by councillors and harassed.
A confusing period followed, in which one new appointee came in and then absented herself, followed by a rather flawed advertising process, and – finally – a further appointment was made.

Amazingly, this rather messy performance has ended up with a good candidate.  Denise Wheat is well known in Tean (the next village along from us) for being a leading light in community projects there and is an established business-woman (she runs her own photography concern).

Denise is already taking courses in the responsibilities and functions expected of a clerk to a village council. Although clerks are not elected so they can’t make policy decisions, they are expected to ‘manage’ the council’s actions and procedures.

Denise has a difficult job on her hands, not just with guiding the current councillors, but in responding to the government’s calls that village/community councils be more active and more transparent. What’s more, there are elections to the council in less than twelve months!

Voting time

…no, don’t worry, it’s not our council election time (that’s next year), BUT your votes are requested please.

Nearly everybody will know John Clarke (see pic right). In the last few years he has been the go-to man for so much that happens in our village.
John ClarkeHe is best-known for the being the Chief Organiser of the Draycott Summer Fayre, which is now so successful that being organiser is almost a year-round job.
But John also does the little things too – he repairs our bus-shelters and notice-boards, delivers community newsletters, helped set up the churchyard lighting, and the like. He was the courageous fellow who climbed up into the church belfry for six months, working to restore the church’s 500-year old bells!
And he does it all for nothing.

In recognition of his work, this year John has been selected as one of the finalists in the Staffs Moorlands Volunteer Of The Year Award. However, the winner is decided by public vote – so, please take the thirty seconds to vote for him.

King of potholes

The county council used to have an excuse for the plethora of potholes. They said most of them were caused by unstable tarmac contracting in freezing winter conditions. Well, in a very hot Spring, that excuse looks less believable.
A really nasty pothole has appeared on Cresswell Lane leading up to the cricket club. Because of the incline, it’s hard to see it until the last minute, and we’ve seen cars swerving very late to avoid it. But this manoeuvre is crazy because you’re approaching the blind brow of a hill there…Pothole D Cross 2018
However, the king of potholes, well over six inches deep, is at Draycott Cross on the road leading up to Boundary (see pic above). It’s a nightmare because it’s on a very narrow bend; you can feel your axle crunching as you go into it. Motorists, beware.

“New village” for Draycott

As we predicted some months ago, a planning application for a local estate of over 100 homes has been given the final green light by Staffs Moorlands Council.

The developers, St Modwen, have had dibs on the land all along the ridge overlooking Draycott Level for some time; and when they decided they wanted to build houses at one end of it, it would have been a hard fight to stop them.
The new estate, which will sit in the pocket of land which has the A50 on one side and the Blythe Bridge roundabout on the other, will also have a new access road – which will come out by the Chandni Cottage restaurant.

Predictably, our Draycott Council had almost nothing to say about this,  (despite the new estate being on the parish border), but the Stunner newspaper reported  great disappointment from local residents Lee Warburton and Paul Dyke.
Paul said: “How on earth can an access road across an extremely busy carriageway, no more than a stone’s thrown from one of the city’s most dangerous accident black-spot roundabouts make any sense? Adding in the extra cars from 118 houses will only make things worse.”
Another resident, Brian Sammons said that the site was so isolated up on the ridge that it amounted to a “new village”.

St Modwen has yet to announce what building plans they have for the rest of the ridge stretching along to Cresswell. Watch this space.

Historic site sold

One of Draycott’s most interesting properties looks like it has finally been sold. High Coneygreave Farm, up on Draycott Cross near Huntley Wood, is ‘under offer’ for around £400,000. High Coneygreave FarmThe farm-site is very old, though the farmhouse itself is probably only 19th century (does any local historian know the answer?) and is in a lovely spot, with views all around. The only thing that seems to have put buyers off is all the work needed on the house.

Incidentally, the farm is on the access road to Huntley Wood Recreation Park, a private facility which is mostly used these days by ‘game-playing’ or ‘role-playing’ societies. The members of these societies use the Wood’s open spaces to enact live scenarios similar to Dungeons & Dragons etc.
So the new owners of High Coneygreave will have to get used to wizards and wonder-women passing their door!

What’s up at Draycott Council?

(Our local Draycott Council gets up to so many odd things that we almost can’t keep up, so we have given the council its own little section)

It might be best to try and forget the last council meeting.
The council was supposed to have organised a village-assembly (when the whole village comes together, to look back on the last year and plan for the next).
Well, it was a shambles. It was so badly organised and badly advertised that only one village organisation turned up specially (John Clarke, thank goodness, gave a report on the forthcoming village Summer Fayre) and less than ten people attended.

What’s more, the acting council clerk said she wasn’t attending, and no-one had thought to go and collect the paperwork off her for the meeting, so it was all a bit confused. Sigh.

Let’s hope the councillors get their act together in time for the Council’s Annual Meeting next month, when they have to report on the council’s achievements over the last year. Hmm…

Draycott Summer Fayre 2018

Welcome to the big event of the year… the 27th Annual Draycott-in-the-Moors Summer Fayre Weekend, which once again promises a full thirty-six hours of fun (with a little sleep thrown in in the middle…), taking place on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th July 2018.

Highlights
# Saturday day: NEW!! For the first time, there will be a huge car-boot sale on the front-field during this day.
# Saturday evening: ‘Saturday Night Live’ brings three bands, a disco, & beer festival, all under a huge marquee. Headlining is a seventeen-piece dance outfit…!
# Sunday daytime: St Margaret’s Summer Fayre from 11am-4pm – with the Historia Normannis re-enactment group (looking back to the days of Bad King John!), an extensive vintage car rally, entertainment in the marquee…. and lots lots more (for details, see further below)

Everything takes place around Ford’s Field, slap bang in the centre of the village (for sat-navs, it’s ST11 9AE); and it’s all free to children of school age.

Saturday Sales
In the past, a small car-boot sale event has been held during the main fayre on the Sunday – but it has proved so successful, it has been decided to give the car-boot event a day of its own.  Starting at 9.30am, it’s hoped that we shall see dozens of stalls selling a wide variety of items. Pitch Fee only £5!
If you have stuff stored in your garage, why not apply for a spot? Maureen Winfield is in charge – email her for details.

Party on, on Saturday
For those that love to dance or just appreciate live music (and appetising food), you get your moment on Saturday evening (7th July), when the field’s large marquee will be put to good use. The night will have its food & drink organised by The Draycott Arms again (thanks Zara and Brayn!).

The line-up for the music is:
…the Woodstrings duo, performing songs by The Rolling Stones, Ocean Colour Scene, INXS, Stereophonics, The Strokes and more
….one of the bands returning from last year, Bear Withers who describe themselves as a “seamless blend of popular covers and bad jokes”!

Hassell St Jive Candy
… and a seventeen piece swing band, Hassell Street Jive Candy (pic above) who will really end the night on a dance-crazy high! Check out their videos for proof
… the compere & DJ will be Andy Bird.

Packed Sunday
And it’s up early on the Sunday (8th) for everyone if you want to get your money’s worth at the fayre, where gates open at 11am.

The first event is the ever-popular Dog Show at 11.30am, (If you think your dog has the makings of a winner, be sure to get to the fayre by 11am to register). This year, Diane Bostock and her team are going for an upgrade, with more classes  and an even more professional approach. Entrance fee per dog is £2, and you can enter your dog for more than one class.

From then on it’s fast & furious.
The main attraction is the previously-mentioned re-enactment group Historia Normannis. They’ve done some high-profile venues, including Kenilworth Castle. From exciting massed combat, knights displaying their prowess in tournaments, displays of archery, woodwork and metalworking, all to the singing and music of the court of the time, Historia Normannis presents the workings of 12th century life.
Their Norman Village is especially fascinating, with various crafts explaining the Norman way of life. The ‘village’ will be running all day.

The other big attraction is the long-established vintage vehicle rally, run by the evergreen Tom Sale, with over one hundred cars, motorcycles, lorries, coaches, machines, commercial vehicles and tractors. Every year, the rally alone brings in hundreds of visitors. Contact Tom if you’d like to take part.

Old favourites will be returning …. the Community Sports and Tug-of-War tournaments; Milner’s fun-fair; the ferret racing (with Malcolm Adlington); Anthony Hammond’s live & electric wood-carving; and Christopher’s Reptiles.
Kids will be enthralled by the Coverdale Puppets show, and by Mr Abracadabra (who performs traditional Punch & Judy and balloon-art also).

But there is always something new to see…  in the paddock this year all afternoon, you’ll find the donkey rides. The Happy Donkey Company is a local business, and we welcome them for the first time to Draycott.
Staffordshire Fire Service were also eager to get involved, and will be sending along a fire-tender, and answering questions about their work. The organisation was particularly impressed that our fayre permits free entry to all school-age children, as good fire safety starts when children start to learn it as youngsters.

Really fascinating for history enthusiasts this year though will be a remarkable and special display run by Levison Wood, the chairperson of our local district history society. To remember one hundred years since the end of World War One, he and his wife are re-creating a section of a WW1 trench, remembering the events of a century ago, and celebrating the local soldiers who took part.

Remember these? The reptiles are back this year…

It’s marvellous to be able to say that many local people will be running sales-stalls too, selling everything from ice-cream to plants. Local community groups will be hosting information stands (and probably selling a little jam on the side…).
For those interested in the future of the village, the Neighbourhood Plan committee has taken a ‘roadshow’ stall on the day, and will be happy to discuss current progress of the project with residents.
You can register your tug-of-war team (it’s just a fun event, folks, not for professionals!) on the day with the compere, but it would be helpful if you email the Fayre Organiser with your plans.

And …. relax
Need a rest? Thank goodness for the ‘Saint Margaret’s Bar’ and its cooling beers and ciders (and other drinks). A big thank-you to The Draycott Arms which will be running it again this year. Zara Hutson from the Arms has promised a proper choice of beers, so if you enjoy a pint, it really will suit you.

And don’t forget: the wonderful Tea Shop run by Christine Wibberley and her extended family; the barbecue, run by Draycott Moor College staff; and the hog-roast being organised by Tom Sale’s nephew.

This is a local event, all run voluntarily by local people for a local charitable cause (the ongoing, and expensive, maintenance of our lovely 13th century village church, St Margaret’s).
The fayre is held, as usual, right in the centre of the village, on Uttoxeter Road (ST11 9AE) – with gates open at 11am. The day closes around 4.30pm.
Entry is £5, but children under-17 get in free.
On-site car-parking is free.  The helpful attendants are provided by Staffordshire Police Cadets, Leek Unit.
First-aid is on site, provided by St John’s Ambulance local branch.

As has been said, this is a strictly volunteer-run local event with all profits going to our village’s oldest building.
So, thinking of that – if you live locally, do you think you can help, by volunteering?
On the Sunday (and the Saturday evening) there is always a need. People are required for all sorts of tasks – from the basic, like stewarding on the car-park, right through to ‘shepherding’ the main acts.
If you can spare even a little time, or have some expertise, please email the Fayre Organiser, John Clarke. He will be very happy to hear from you!

Saturday Parade

One of the biggest attractions this year is The American Civil War Society re-enactors. In costume from 150 years ago, they really know how to make history come alive – sometimes with big bangs…! They will be camping on the fayre field; and will parade from Blythe Bridge to Draycott on Saturday afternoon, leaving BB at 2.30pm, flags flying.

For those that love to dance or just appreciate some live music (and beautiful food), you get your moment on Saturday evening (8th July), when the field’s marquee will be put to good use.
The terrific Jacque Rabbit band (featuring local lad Richard Ward) will be back again, by popular demand; with Peter Wright’s ‘SuperiorSounds Disco’ on the decks kicking off the night at 7pm.
Two very lively bands are the support: Bear Withers (a “seamless blend of popular covers and bad jokes”!) and Moore & Moore Beer.

Team that with The St Margaret’s Beer Festival & Hog Roast (courtesy of The Draycott Arms) and you have a fun summer’s night entertainment, all under cover too. Price – £5 entry, kids under-17 get in free…

Biggest fayre ever

And it’s up early on the Sunday (9th) for everyone if you want to get your money’s worth at the fayre. The first event is the ever-popular Dog Show at 11.30am, (If you think your dog has the makings of a champion, be sure to get to the fayre by 11am to register).

From then on it’s fast & furious.
The two big attractions are the previously-mentioned  American Civil War Society re-enactors  who will be around all day – but also putting on an infantry drill display, organising a kids-only drill, and then having their own infantry-only skirmish (keep well back…!) during the course of the afternoon.
The other big attraction is Rodrigo Perez The Human Cannonball. Rodrigo is originally from Chile but is now based here in the Staffordshire Moorlands, and has performed over 3000 shots all around the world. The feat is quite extraordinary; he recently flew forty metres! If you don’t believe us, check out these videos

And of course – there is the long-established vintage vehicle rally, run by the evergreen Tom Sale, with over one hundred cars, motorcycles, lorries, coaches, machines, commercial vehicles and tractors. Every year, the rally alone brings in hundreds of visitors.

And you don’t even have to walk to the fayre! If you live in Tean, Cresswell, Blythe Bridge or Draycott, then jump on the special Fayre bus. POPS, the Potteries Omnibus Preservation Society, will be running a vintage bus around the villages all day from 10am onwards (but not to Meir Park, as previously hoped).  Check out the timetable by clicking on this link.  It’s free to ride, though a small donation would be appreciated.

On the weekend, the big A50 dual carriageway will be shut for repairs between Uttoxeter and Draycott-Blythe Bridge roundabout. This won’t affect the road by the fayre or local motorists, who use alternative roads, but if you’re coming from a distance, you might want to check your route.
First Aid is provided by 239 (Longton) Squadron Air Training Corps. They will also be performing a drill display in the main ring.

Draycott Fayre 2016 – review

On a day when you have to compete against Andy Murray in a Wimbledon final, Lewis Hamilton in the British Grand Prix, not to mention the Annual Cheadle Road Race, you might at least expect the weather to be kind.  Especially when you are celebrating your 25th anniversary.
Nope! Didn’t happen.

The morning of Sunday 10 July dawned windy, squally and rainy. It was so wet underfoot early on in Ford’s Field that the path into the field had to be abandoned eventually (after a lot of work by the fayre tractor-driver hauling vehicles out of the mud!) and exhibiters had to be re-routed on to the site.  Well done to volunteer Nola Ward who acted as an impromptu traffic police officer!
We won’t mention the tent that simply blew in the air and sailed away.

But… as they say … the sun shines on the righteous.
Unbelievably, by late morning, the bad weather was over, and the crowds began to stream in like nothing had happened.

It was another great Fayre.
The piece de resistance’ had to be the float, on the truck: celebrating a wonderful 25 years in existence of this event.

The Draycott Brownies decorated the float (in more ways than one) – it was a magic idea, and also alerted the neighbourhoods to the presence of the fayre.

The great thing about this fayre is that there is something to watch or to do almost every minute – even though the carousel and bouncy trampolines and quad-bikes kept most of the children pretty busy most the time.
Once again, the Y-Draig Vikings re-enactment group were the stars of the day (though no one fancied joining in their authentic seventh-century meal…!)

In fact, for all children there it was a terrific day – with sports (including the brilliant sack-race, and a Vikings vs The Rest tug-o-war) organised by Dave Meller.  He managed to keep charge… most of the time…
Some children also joined in with the drummers, some flocked to the puppets, and some decided to do battle with the Vikings (the Vikings lost).

Community involvement

What was also great was the number of organisations from our community who turned up in one shape or another.   Among them: the church hall committee, Draycott Plant Nurseries, VVSM community action group, the Draycott Craft Club, the local Brownies & Girl Guides, Draycott Sports Centre, St Margaret’s Church congregation, the local Women’s Institute, Draycott Moor College (who raised £1100 on the day!!), Andy Bird and the Angling Club, the Draycott Arms… not to mention the St Margaret’s Fayre Committee & Volunteers led so ably by John Clarke…
If we’ve forgotten anyone – our apologies.
Next year, it would be nice to see even more community-based organisations doing their bit…

It was also wonderful to see the oldest person in our district turn up.  Betty Hammond (the former parish councillor) is well over 100 years old, but she was there – determined to see her grandson Anthony Hammond perform his usual startling feats of wood-sculpture.
Incidentally, a kind lady bought young Sam a ticket to try to win Anthony’s finished sculpture (a wooden owl) – and it turned out to be the winning ticket!  A nice story.
