News of… Jubilee, a happy batsman, plants a-plenty

News-in-brief of Draycott In The Moors in late May 2012
Updates on the Izaak, a batsman on fire!, Jubilee happenings – and more.
There are also dozens of events in the area. Check out the Events page!

Izaak open for summer

The new managers at the Izaak Walton Inn have settled in after accepting the role at very short notice!  (See – what’s been happening at the Izaak).
Annette & Neil are actually retired, but do ‘emergency fill-in’ when a difficult situation, like the one at the Izaak, suddenly develops.

They’re a nice, friendly, cheerful couple and Annette is a pretty good chef! They’ll be here for at least three months while the owners try to find a new tenant, and, with a new menu up and running, will be opening the pub every day all day.

The going rental price at the moment for the Izaak is $34,500 a year, if you’re interested.  See: Izaak to let.

Celebrations

We thought it was going to be fairly quiet in Draycott for the Jubilee, but we’ve just learnt that the Quick Quick Slow Dance Studio is having a Jubilee Ball… with all the trimmings!   (See: Things To Do)
Also, St Margaret’s is having a Benefice Jubilee Luncheon on Sunday 3rd June. If you’re a parishioner, you can phone Angela (01538 723561) to see if any tickets are left.

Wedding decorations at St Mary's in Cresswell

St Mary’s in Cresswell was decked out for Emma-Louise & James’ wedding

And, there has been a second wedding in less than a fortnight. After the recent celebration at St Margaret’s (in Church Lane), the sun shone as St Mary’s (in Cresswell Old Road) also hosted a bride & groom.

Run-getter

What’s also setting this area alight – well, at least for cricket fans – is the amazing run-scoring record of Blythe Cricket Club’s professional, Asif Hussain.
With the season only a month old, the lad has already clicked up a 150 score, and a 99 not-out. This batsman is on fire!
The first team’s next home game (at the Cresswell ground) is on Saturday June 2nd – might be worth going along to see him in action…

Jubilee Blooms

People will of course be buying lots of cut flowers for the Jubilee, but we prefer ours growing, so we dropped into the Draycott Plant Nurseries.

The changes there since last November when Neil & Carolyn took it over are staggering. The stock has quadrupled at least, and the prices are really reasonable.
Of course, it has helped that the couple have now been able to sell their house in Cheshire, and have found a place to live nearby, in Blythe Bridge.  That means that they can now be busy and on-site almost 24 hours a day… (poor them!)

Anniversaries

There are two sad anniversaries around this time of course.

Steve Swinson’s family will be remembering him.
Steve – from Rookery Crescent in Cresswell, and who ran the Swinson Steel Structures firm -,was killed just a year ago in Switzerland where his business was running a building contract.  He is buried at Forsbrook cemetery.
His memory still inspires charitable giving by members of his family, as he was a great supporter of the Staffordshire Air Ambulance.

And it’s eight years since little Lewis Jones was killed on Sandon Road in a car accident. A small plant on the roadside still marks the spot where he died.
A Speedwatch group was formed in Cresswell in response to Lewis’ death; and, we’re glad to say, it is still going strong today, and still accepting volunteers.
